Industry Experience

Hal Routh works exclusively with commercial construction company owners who want to exit well — and on their terms.

He began his career in commercial banking, structuring and underwriting financing for operating companies and real estate development projects. In 1996, he transitioned into the commercial construction industry, spending more than two decades in executive leadership roles with leading regional and national firms across the Southeast. During that time, he contributed to over $4 billion in construction projects, gaining firsthand insight into the financial, operational, and ownership realities construction leaders face every day.

In 2018, Hal founded Equalizer9 to help construction companies win smarter and plan better. What began as coaching on high-return win strategies and ownership succession planning has evolved into a singular focus: helping construction company owners design and execute the most advantageous exit possible.

Expertise, Education & Personal Life

Hal’s uncommon combination of deep financial expertise and real-world construction leadership allows him to guide owners with both strategic clarity and practical understanding. He has successfully advised general contractors as well as trade firms, including plumbing, electrical, site work, and asphalt paving contractors—always with one goal in mind: maximizing value while protecting legacy.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in Economics and Political Science, and holder of an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Hal splits his time between Hampstead and Waynesville, North Carolina, though he’ll always call the small town of Bennett home.

He is married, has three grown children, and three very large dogs. When he’s not working with owners, you’ll find him playing mediocre golf or saltwater fishing—but he seldom catches anything.
